AI Guidelines

Teachers are expected to provide direction on the use of AI on assignments using one of these designations:

Expectations for Students on the Use of AI Tools:

Check that their use of AI is consistent with the teacher's expectation (stoplight analogy: red, yellow or green)
Do all work in Google drive using their school account. The assignment MUST show the revision history of the work. With teacher permission, the final product may appear in another application after all work has been completed in Google.
Be prepared to show their process, not just the final product. Students may be asked to share key decisions they made during the creation, editing, and final stages of the assignment and be able to show how/where/to what extent AI was used.
Properly cite the use of AI tools
Ask the teacher for permission/clarification as needed

Specific instructions for the assignment indicating the permitted use of AI (red, yellow, green) as shared with the student/class
Results from an AI detection tool (note that AI detection tools are not 100% accurate)
Revision history in Google
Comparison of submitted work to:
- A previous writing sample
- A teacher generated AI response to the assignment

Discuss the items the teacher has gathered with the student:

Student shares their process in completing the assignment, sharing where relevant:

Google revision history
All resources used
Key decisions they made during the creation, editing, and final stages of the assignment

Based on the student conference, the teacher will determine:

Student satisfactorily explained their process and the teacher will grade assignment as is
Student and teacher reach consensus on misuse of AI - Teacher refers to building-level policies on academic integrity taking into account age/grade of student and first or subsequent offense. Teacher may offer student a second chance.
- Teacher calls parent and discusses/explains outcome
In line with building policies and code of conduct, and/or if the teacher and student do not reach consensus, the teacher refers incident to administration for follow-up.
