Attendance Policy

Excused absences are defined in the SCSD Board policy as absences, tardies, and early departures from class or school due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, impassable roads or weather, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearance, attendance at health clinics, approved college visits, approved field trips, approved guidance/administration appointments, approved cooperative work programs, or such other reasons as may be approved by the administration. All other absences are considered UNEXCUSED. Unexcused absences will result in disciplinary action consistent with the District’s Code of Conduct. Those penalties may include, for example, detention or in school suspension, and/or the loss of credit for tests/ work missed during the unexcused absence. Students may also be denied the privilege of participating in or attending extracurricular activities.

Students with an excused absence are expected to arrange with their teachers to make up any work missed. Students with an unexcused absence are expected upon their return to consult with their teachers regarding the missed work. Make-up opportunities must be completed by a date specified by the student’s teacher for the class in question. Only those students with an excused absence will be given the opportunity to make up a test of other missed work and/or turn in a late assignment for inclusion in their final grade.

 Continuous monitoring will be conducted to identify students who are absent, tardy, or leave class or school early. The school will contact a parent/guardian when a pattern of absence or tardiness is noted. Parents/Guardians may be required to meet with school personnel to develop a plan to improve their child’s school attendance.
